- Specialty nurseries and garden artisans. Noon speaker,
Sharon Beals, Gardening for Birds Means Gardening for
Bugs
Ever since Sharon Beals learned about the
decline in bird populations due to habitat loss, her love of nature
and curiosity has led her on a quest to learn how birds can flourish
in nature and gardens. A recent estimate of insect apocalypse,
in decline by 70 percent, has had a direct correlation with an
alarming drop in bird populations. Sustaining insect
populations will aid in the survival of bird populations since an
astounding 96 percent are insectivores. Even the hummers
sipping on floral nectar need a serving of insect protein.
Creating habitat in our gardens will contribute towards a healthier
and more beautiful world for birds, bugs and all. Daisy Mah
will talk about perennials and Stan "The Tool Man" Logan will cover
15 garden tools.

Changing Climate - Master Gardener S. Savage
A warming atmosphere, warming oceans,
acidic seas, rising sea levels, and earlier onset of spring are some
of the headlines we read today. But, it isn't the first time in
Earth's history that it has happened. In the past, Earth
experienced five major extinctions. Does what is happening now
share anything in common with those events? If so, what can we
learn from them? Are we experiencing a sixth major
extinction? How will the warming, rising sea levels, and earlier
spring affect us as home owners and gardeners? Join us for some
answers to those questions and to see how we might learn from the
past, and the steps we might, as gardeners, take to ensure a future
healthy earth.
